graphic design was the logical choice for a fledgling student
with an interest in art, looking for a degree that offered a job future. my
recurring nightmares of sitting in rags on a street corner in soho, drawing
pictures of passers-by to earn a bite to eat... and my visions of standing
on a freeway offramp in east los angeles, holding a sign that read "i'll make little
clay figurines of your family members for food" kept me focused on getting a "proper"
education. after earning my a.a. degree in photography at grossmont community
college in 1987, i continued on to san diego state university, in search of a
bachelor's degree in art with a graphic design emphasis. i completed the design
program, complete with shiney new diploma, in 1990. i began employment as a
graphic designer in 1990. the results (complete with commentary) of the last 4 years
of "paying my dues" as a designer are contained in the [web] pages you see before you.
